Testing Tips

#NorthsideStJ Parents/Guardians,

Each year all public schools give an assessment called the MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment), which measures student knowledge of state standards. This is administered in grades 3-8, 10, and 11.

What are the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs)?

The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCAs) are state tests in mathematics, reading, and science. They are given every year to measure student performance against the Minnesota Academic Standards that specify what students in each grade should know and be able to do. We use the information to improve teaching and learning.

More information from MDE regarding statewide assessments:

Statewide assessments provide a snapshot of what students have learned. Just as student picture day provides a single image of a student for that school year, Minnesota’s statewide assessments provide only part of the story of individual student learning. All the photos–from the full classroom, the full grade level or the full district–offer even greater insight.

How/when are the MCA tests given?

Students will take the MCAs on their chromebook and students will be tested on the following dates:

  • Reading - Week of April 15th

  • Math - Week of April 22nd

  • Science - Week of April 29th (5th Grade Only)

How can I see the Official MCA results for my student?

An individual report for each student will be sent to parents/guardians from the Minnesota Department of Education with results. You can expect this report in the fall.

Important Information for Testing Days!

  • Have your child get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious, protein-filled breakfast before taking the test (breakfast is available at school)

  • Encourage your child to answer all test questions and take their time, the MCA is not a timed test. They can go at their own pace. It’s important for students to put forth their best effort even if it means they are not getting done as fast as everyone else seems to be.

Thank you so much for helping us prepare our students for a successful MCA testing period this year.

Respectfully,

Liam Dawson, Principal
