"Welcome to the Wonderful World of Math"
Welcome back to another wonderful year at St. James Public Schools! My name is Connie Hesse, and I am the Math Instructional Coach at Northside Elementary. This is my 28th year in education, and I'm always learning new things! My first 14 years were spent teaching 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in Sleepy Eye, Marshall, and Minneota. I then journeyed into the administrative world for 12 years and although I enjoyed making a difference in the lives of so many students, teaching children has always been my passion. I love being back in the classroom again!
Thankfully I was blessed with this coaching position last year, and I thoroughly enjoy working with the first-fifth graders who have difficulty in math. I also work collaboratively with the teachers to determine student needs and design interventions that will improve their performance, both in and out of the classroom. By helping students grow academically, I also support their emotional and social needs which will hopefully instill a love for learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and so much more!
Parents truly are a child's first teacher, so please take the time to orally review math facts with your son or daughter as you make dinner. When you go to the grocery store, have your child estimate what a few items will cost. For quality family time, play a game of Yahtzee which will reinforce math skills that are being taught in the classroom. I certainly look forward to partnering with you so together we can hear more children say, "Welcome to the Wonderful World of Math!"
